WILD THING RACEWAY PHOTOS AND COMMENTS

Dust, wind and more dust. The dry, hot wind negated Saturday's efforts to soak the track and turned the place into a dust bowl. How the poor riders were able to see is beyond me. Congratulations to you all, you showed enormous skill and courage in awfull conditions.

The dust did claim one victim; Terrance Beaton, who was committed to jumping the new double when the riders in front of him slowed and he had to change his line at the last moment. Terrance had to have surgery on his ankle and we really hope he is ok and recovers soon.

Mitchell Kruger fell badly on the old back section. I'm not sure whether the conditions played a role, but in the dust nobody saw him except the folk from Middelburg who fetched him by car and took him to the top end where he could get medical attention for a broken arm.

Kyle Johnston also had a heavy fall on the first of the two sweeps before the back section. Despite being in obvious pain and his quad's front wheels pointing in different directions, got back on and finished the heat. This brave little guy could not even make it a metre past the chequered flag. How hard it is to watch a youngster a struggle like that, only a few feet from you, and you can't do anything about it!

Number 222 in the Open Blasters, after successfully negotiating the chicken run at huge speed in the first heat, had his luck run out in the first lap of the second heat when he came off with 1 or 2 bumps to go. Although he finished we did not see him race again.

Roy Clarke had a huge fall at the new double. Bent and bruised, he also got back on and finished, making sure he got some points. Hope you are ok Roy, and I bet it hurt even more yesterday!

The new and improved(?) chicken run was a comedyin the practise; a third of the riders got stranded on some of the bigger bumps, chassis on the bump and rear wheels in the air. Fortunately they flattened out a bit and there were only a few mishaps, but plent almosts!

Oh yes, Dave smoked the step-up!

Our rider of the day was a choice between Eric Williams and Sandra Lee Rodrigues. In her 2nd heat Sandra stalled on the start line and could not get started again, and had to be pushed by some willing hands. By the time she got going the rest were long gone. She carved her way through the field and passed Lara on the little double just before the chequered flag. An amazing ride through the field and dust. Eric, well he raced 6 heats and won them all. He makes that Honda work so well and was in no made to share the spoils.

Seems to me the skills just keep climbing and no matter what Pierre throws at them, our riders keep coming back for more.

Quote from Pierre this Sunday:
""As julle nie wil ry nie, loop dan"" to the vets.

A quote from Wynard, in a earlier form:
""It seems to me that it is expected of us to go on our knees and say thank you for the privalage to be allowed to race in this competition as long as we pay up and accept the rules and keep our mouths shut.""

SAY NO MORE!!

Yes I did say that - I don't deny it.
The vets approach leaves much to be desired - my response is in the same context as your threatening one not to ride.

Strangely at no other track would you act the way you do at Wildthing why do you think your behaviour is acceptable at our track and not at any other track.

Why should 150 riders be forced not to ride because of a couple of Vets not wanting to ride.
The decision is yours to ride or not no one can force you.
Anonymous you obviously think you can do better so please do.

I think that Pierre and Jill are doing a fantastic job, not only do they receive little help from the Club Members, they are required to make sure everything runs perfectly for everyone all the time. If something is not according to a certain rider or parents standards they lash out at Pierre and Jill.

I was very suprised to see Jill and Pierre at the hospital on Sunday night to see how Kyle was. Jill said to me that after every race, if there are any incidents they make their way to the hospital to visit the riders. Jill and Pierre run around in the sand, wind and dust all day.....you should have seen what Pierre looked like when he walked into casualty, he didn't go home to shower first. Jill and Pierre and Pierre Jnr left prize giving and came straight to the hospital and visited Terence, Mitchell and Kyle (as well as someone else, can't remember the name). Thanks alot for all your hard work and effort.

Kyle is fine, initially they thought that his ankle was fractured, but after more x-rays, they have confirmed that his ankle is badly sprained. Thank you to all of you for your concern and kind words.

Mitchell over jumped the first jump around the back. The impact of him fitting the second jump broke his arm. He then carried on ride till the end of the straight where some lady gave him a lift to the car, where we carted him of to casualty. Today doctor decided he must stay one more night in the hospital to monitor his progress.

What a day!

WT is constantly being upgraded, this week there were even sprinklers and a new dam in the middle of the track to support them. On a normal day, we would have noticed the difference. Sunday was just exceptional and under the circumstances, hats off to Pierre and his team.

I don't think that riders appreciate what a tough day it is for Andrew, Jill's team, Pierre and his marshalls and all the support people who are out in the sun and the wind for the WHOLE day, not just for 3 heats.

I at least get a bit of time off when the tweelies are running. As a father of a newbie Blaster, rider, I was relieved that my son was not riding on the day, but he was most frustrated. He's broken bones at WT and will break some more. That's why there is superior medical backup at the track and great to see moral support from WT.

One of my last pics is of the Johnson family at the prizegiving. I hate invading people's privacy in times of stress, but I could identify with the emotions. Although the light was bad, I hope I was able to capture the moment and Kyle will be able to look back at that photo to see just how much his folks care.

I'm really glad that Kyle is going to be fine. Natasha and Brian, now that the worst is over, you must be so proud of him.

Please can we be kept posted on how the other guys are doing.

Hopefully, there are some reasonable action pics, I was often shooting blind and then the sun disappeared when i needed it on the stepup at the end.

Again, my email address is nbarrett@bwlog.com so please email me for the full size pics. I need name and date of event and the pic no. If your email is slow and you want a lot of pics, I'll cut a disc. There is no charge for private use, but if your sponsors want to use them, they need to speak to my sponsors. (Mastercard)

When the interactive side of things is up, I'll post an answer as to the best place to go to find out if a quad is stock or not and I have some technical questions as a

FIRST OF ALL THANKS TO PIERRE AND JILL FOR THE INPUT THAT YOU GIVE, I FIRMLY DO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS WHY WILD THING IS SUCH A SUCCESS .I WOULD ALSO LIKE FOR PIERRE TO CONSIDER A PENALTY SYSTEM FOR RIDERS THAT GO ALL OUT WHEN APPROACHING A JUMP AS IF TO JUMP AND THEN STOP .I DO BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL HELP IN THE SAFETY OF THE TRACK.(AND NO PEOPLE I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT NORMAL BLOCKING WHEN IN STRAIGHT LINE )WELL THATS HOW I FEEL ABOUT IT, JUST GET OFF THE RACE LINE WHEN APPROACHING THE JUMP IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT ABOUT JUMPING OR GET RIDDEN OVER.

I noticed a few hairy moments when the banshees were up. Rider A would be chasing Rider B and be expecting to jump the new double or the stepup and then have to take avoiding action as rider B hesitated. It screwed up my shots as I was expecting some air and then they both crawled by.

It's difficult to see how Pierre can do anything other than possibly offering a slower detour for the feint hearted and then black flagging non jumpers who crawl the jump.

I can't see that happening, so I think this needs to be sorted out over a beer, or on the track.

There was a time when Boesman opted for lower trajectories over jumps, but he never slowed anyone down. In fact I can think of times when it was better to get traction earlier and he had an advantage.

On the step up, young Pierre took a line to the extreme right, so close to me that I could not get a shot of him. That tells me that there is another, possibly better line that you can take and safely pass in the air. (Easy for an 'armchair' critic to say.) Good luck.

Once again a "anonymous" person has to criticise.I am surprised Pierre and Jill actually still put the HUGE effort in,just to be criticised.

Pierre,Jill and company - the majority do appreciatte and notice the effort you put in to the track, that is why you have the best track.

Pierre,I ask,beg,plead that you will make track changes a week before we race.PRETTY PLEASE.A request,not criticising. :-?

WT is one of the tracks where there are more than one line over jumps. Nelspruit for example has only got one line, not really quad friendly for jumping.

Thanx Pierre and Jill for the well prepared track. The double was really nice and so was the chicken run but only one problem the wind it was really bad but it's no problem of Pierre and Jill. The track was really really nice and I enjoyed it. Thanks again Jill and Pierre. Can't wait for the next one.

there might be more than one line over the jumps, but on a brand new jump that u get to practise on for two laps and then race it?

but all in all a great day, thnx to the wildthing bunch for keeping us on our toes, never a dull moment with Pierre around.

Goigen's post reminds me that you do not have to jump everything to win. He won the day even though he left room to be passed over the double. Really sensible riding under difficult conditions.

By the next raceday, he'll have found his rhythm thru the double and be back to 3 aces.

Just want to say well done to all the riders of Sunday. Eric you rode like a dream. Well done my Boytjie. People let us stop criticizing Jill and Pierre and start behaving like adults. I have to agree even if Pierre had put gallons of water on the track, it would not have helped. Remember we had a "WIND STORM".:P:P:P:P

meneer schourie, ons banshee's hardloop so vinnig dat as jy by die end vannie straight kom, moet jy bliksems hard briek, anderstens gaan jy saam met die spectators beland (excuse my afrikaans, i can only talk it deliciously after a hard day's oval racing listening to the music from ur Nissan )

Stevie Wonder: (1) Read carefully, I did not believe a black flag would be appropriate. (2) I think we all know who the riders were that I could not photograph in the air when they were together.

There are some riders that are swift, despite a lack of air. If you can defend your line crawling, well and good, but hear the frustration of your fellow riders and understand that there will be an attempt that could turn out really bad if you do attempt.

3) You may be interested to know that HNK successfully Blackflagged some culprets that have previously caused trouble at WT Oval. They left the facility soon afterwards.

4) What has my jumping got to do with anything. If I was racing, I have no doubt that I would not venture onto the racetrack unless I could. If I did not jump a particular jump, I would probably follow Goigen's example.

5) I'd like to see YOUR photos. hehehehehe

No, White boy and blue quad selects the appropriate options given track conditions, considering risks and rewards and then emerges victorious.

For any open 2-Strokes, there are no jumps at ERORA and I have seen a Banshee win a heat against the top resident 450cc go carts that reign at WT Oval.

There is also a big jr Blaster class at intermediate skill level and more actual stock 100cc's than anywhere else although stock and mod do race in the same class.

Our little yellow tortoise will be running there and hopefully so will our +-200cc go cart.

I fully agree that Pierre and Jill did their best as usual. No amount of water would have settled that sand storm, the water would only have wetted us and not the track and then we would have been the dinges in because we got wet and then muddy. WELL DONE TO WILD THING. Jill, again, plese shout if you need help.
