Race Report. Some heats we could not watch. If you would like to add or comment on heats we did not see, go ahead.

Open Heat 1
Clayton got holeshot with a charging Jacques Struwig on his heels, with Toni Cutino and Hendrik Potgieter bringing up 3rd and 4th. Boesman and Clayton were going at it wheel to wheel until Boesman's axle broke as he landed the main tabletop. Toni moved in and was all over Clayton. Eventually he tried to pass Clayton in the air at the off-set tabletop! He went ballistic wheels up, straight up and very high. Unfortunately what goes up must come down and went over the front very hard as he landed. A brave move and had he made it stick it would have been the pass of a lifetime. Hendrik now found himself in a deserved second but there was no catching Clayton in this mood at this stage of the race. Nathaniel, who was a front runner at the last event at this venue, was strangely running well down when we realised his right front wheel was flat. He stayed on the gas and I'd love to know how that tyre stayed on the rim.

Heat 2

No glitches for Nathaniel this time. He was able to set off in the lead off the line with Boesman and Toni in tow. Clayton was strangely in fourth with Hendrik on his tail. Amazingly nobody in this group made any serious passing attempts as they became a bit strung out. They finished in that order.

Heat 3

This time Boesman, Clayton and Nathaniel all barreled into the first corner vying for the same line waiting for someone to give ground. Boesman had the inside line and on the exit it was him who emerged in the lead with Nathaniel just about sharing his chest protector. He was followed closely by Toni then Clayton then Hendrik. As the race progressed Boesman would pull a gap on Nathaniel in the corners, only to have it wiped out on the approaches to the jumps as Boesman was clearly mindful of damaging another axle. Try as he may, and try he did, Nathaniel could not make his superior jumping on the day count, and Boesman beat him to the line, with Toni, Clayton and Hendrik in close tow. Great racing from these top guys.
Next year they are joined by the likes of Eric, Brian, Bruce and Donnovan Ledwick and this class will be the most hotly and closely contested racing of any form.

U17 Heat 1
Pierre vd Berg, followed by Juan Coetzee and Brian Baragwanath lead the way round, before Brian decided enough is enough and passed them both. Soon Eric Williams, from a bad position got past them both as well making the order Brian, Eric, Pierre and Juan. The only hiccup was when Nishar Karim found himself stationery across a corner and he got T Boned by Kyle Freemantle. Both were able to resume racing but finished out of sight of the leaders and those chasing them.
Heat 2
Eric was first into the first corner, followed by Bruce Beaton and then Pierre vd Berg. Eric then just got into a magic groove and set about demoralizing the rest. Meanwhile heat 1 winner Brian had a rotten start and was languishing in seventh position. Then he started his charge by passing a surprised Kyle on the outside after the main tabletop. Then Eugene on the outside before the stepup. Then Juan. Then Pierre also on the outside just before the stepup, much to his suprise also. The charge put Brian into third position by the end, a great charge. But the ride by Eric was seriously awesome, finishing 1st by some 40 metres despite slacking off the pace in the last lap when it became clear he had this one in the bag.
Heat 3
Eric again streaked ahead of the field. Brian again did not have the best of starts and it was up to him to play catchup. He produced the ride of the day when he fell badly at the bottom towards the end of the second last lap. He immediately rejoined the race in a distant 9th position and within 1 and a quarter laps scorched the track to finish 6th a metre behind Kyle. 3 more laps and he would have been keeping Eric company. Awesome comeback, Brian!

Vets Heat 1
Carel Ludeke led for half the race with Roy Clarke on his heels. The next thing Roy came round in the lead with Carel well down the pack. David Geldart came home in 2nd place. I later found out Carel’s chain came off and after putting it back on he still managed 5th position.
Heat 2
No mistakes from Carel this time as he kept his Honda ahead of Roy.
Heat 3
Carel again led the race for the full distance but this time it was Andre Kruger who followed him home. Honda 1 and 2???

Ladies Heat 1
Zelda from Sandra-Lee, from start to finish.
Heat 2 saw local rider Elmien Larney take the honours, while Heat 3 was won in fine style by, until then, a very subdued Lara Reed. The racing was close with little space between the three ladies, but little opportunity to pass.

2 Strokes Heat 1
PW Malan and Greg Allen streaked ahead from the start. Greg stayed with PW for the first few laps, but then PW started pulling away. Mid way through the race Johan Klopper got past Greg and that's how they finished.
Heat 2
Last week it was hapless Greg Allen who stopped racing a lap short. This time it was Ettiene Schourie who strangely stalled on the line. No amount of kicking could get the Banshee started until he discovered his kill switch lanyard had mysteriously disconnected.

Heats 1 and 2 were won by PW and the 3rd Heat by a newcomer to this championship, Johan Klopper, a great guy with good skills among a group of guys with great attitudes.

Blasters Heat 1
The Juniors and Seniors were combined and right away it was Eric (Snr) followed Juan Coetzee and Pierre vd Berg, both juniors. Half way and Pierre passed Juan and I think that's how they finished. Eric showed Pierre and Juan, the way round in all three heats, but there was little to choose between the 3 front runners.

Modified 100's
Heat 1
Mohammed Hoosen led from Marieke vd Linde and Devan Wilson for most of the race, but Marike passed him at the top sweep and she didnt look book. Devon was riding for himself and his brother Brandon who was out with a broken wrist, and he made sure of a solid 3rd.
Heat 2
Mohammed made no mistakes this time and Marike could not catch him. Devon again filled 3rd position.
Heat 3
This class seems to be dogged by mishaps. In heat 1 Kyle Johston blew a motor, heat 2 his clutch went. Heat 3 he rode with what was left of the clutch. In Heat 3 both Marieke and Devan got DNFs when they pushed their quads over the finish line. Now I couldn’t push a rollerskate over that jump, and these youngsters had to get help to do the same. The rules do not allow assistance so their efforts were in vain. Good to see the disappointed parents accept the DNF rulings.

It was a good event. The track was immaculately prepared and generally everything went off like clockwork. Well done Victor, and your prize giving certainly had me entertained to the hilt, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

A last thought. I see signs that Yamaha’s total dominance is coming to an end. The 2006 YFZ is not that different from the 2005 model. Meanwhile the Honda machines are getting more and more competitive. In any other country both brands would be scurrying to either capitalize on new gains, or in the case of Yamaha, re-establish hard won superiority. But in good old RSA the importers are pathetically quiet and absent. Initially thoughts of “..sleeping giants..” came to mind, but now it’s clearly they are double D’s, Dozey (you fill in the last word). Instead it is left to private independent dealers to support our sport, guys like Factory Racing, Southern ATV, ATV Powersport, Graham Singer and others. Here and there a franchised dealer like Linex supports their sponsored rider. This is also the case at the Nationals. We all know what the independent guys do and they could teach the brands a thing or two, even on the technical side. They are always willing to lend a hand at trackside too. Despite manufacturer claims we all know the “race ready” slogan is a load of bull and it’s these guys that turn these fun machines into racing machines for us.

So next time you replace a quad, or add to your quiver, remember who the guys are who support our sport. I know I will.

If only we'd put spacers on the Dinli and entered the 100cc mods. 3 finishes would have counted.:):):):)

Well the dyno tuning on the Dinli is done and the front brakes will hold it back, so he will not be 20m back into the holeshot.

There was no more to spend, but i did find something that will add at least 5hp. A shiny silver hemet and boots that fit.

I am sourcing spacers pending confirmed approval for club races.

Thanks for the quick update for those of us who were not there.

I am whispering the following question: (Were the 100cc mod issues settled?)

Well what can I say? Rules are rules. I think Marike rode very well but can you believe it, MASTER LINK. Congrats to Mohammed and the rest of the riders aswell. To Victor and his team, well done!
ps.The new rule regarding push over, You must now carry your bike and the bike of your nearest competetor under your arms, 5 times over the finish line. (only at tracks where it is possible to push your bike over the line)

Well done to Mohammed 4 a great ride.Devon and Mariekie rode their hearts out, with the three entertaining us.Alas it was not to be for Devon & Mariekie due to a engine failure 4 devon in 3rd heat, last lap and chain 4 mariekie. The last Nelspruit inland robbed Devon and Mohammed of their places cos they could not push their quads over the tabletop,Thus time it was Mariekie and Devon once again.Rules are rules, but a adult would not push a 50cc quad over that tabletop, let alone a kid.Maybe a point to alter for next year.Otherwise a great well run event.Well done to all the organisers and riders. :-?:-?

clive.in the last heat of the toppies race, andre kruger came 2nd and not devon.andre wishes he was 20 again.re your comment on manufaturers support.we have approached all of them to look at sponsoring quads for the the freestyle team but to no avail.this is why i will not support them and would rather buy grey imports at a much lower price and so get my moneys worth in xtras from the likes of hannes and nathanial. mega bike and c.i.t.for bikes/quads.nb lee is jumping(freestyle)at the dome today and tomorrow and would appreciate the support.1st show at 11.30 daily and 2nd show 2.30pm daily--- come and watch---its awesome

Hey guys, thanks again and well done to all for yet another great event, though the heats were a bit short, especially the one when I landed on my head :-? I am extremely priveleged to race against the standard of competition that was displayed again on sat. This would not be possible without the support of some guys I'd like to thank. Firstly, Linex Yamaha & Motorsport Distribution for their sponsorship & Porno from DGS Racing for pimping my ride! Also to Nath from Factory Racing and Dean Blom for bending over backwards to help accomodate us "long distance competitors" And to Ricky for loaning me his helmet after I smashed mine. I really appreciate it guys :) So I'll be seeing you all at Sandcastle on 27 Aug (nudge wink) but definitely at Pietersburg in Oct.
Cheers
(ps thanks to daddy too for being my "financial manager")

Toni , thanks for making the effort to come inland. Would realy like to see you in POLOKWANE.(nudge wink)

Thanks

Thanks Gys,it was dissapointing for our kids, but those are the rules for this year. This we are extremely proud of our kids for the way they rode, the kids know they rode well,we have put it behind us and look forward to many great days of racing.Motorsport can be a cruel game, but it also teaches the kids values and to bounce back. The championship has still been great, and it can only improve. Thanks to all your efforts,Pierre,Jill and rest of crew.

open discussion:
1.How would people feel about forming a riders committee (not track owners)for an inland or national championship? The riders pay to race and want challenging but reasonably safe tracks. Do you believe the riders should have a say in which track they want to race? For example, have the 4 venues, but have 10 different tracks tender to be one of the preferred tracks. The committee looks at the venues to check which tracks comply and the 4 chosen tracks will be part of the inland or national.
2. Have an independent clerk of the course & marhalls for all the venues(not track owners). That will stop favouritism & dirty riders will be black-flagged.
3.When the riders (via the committee)want to alter rules or regulations there must be an open vote
4. If there is any interest in a riders committee as described above, maybe Clive can organise something on the website?
